NEH COLLEGE INAUGURATION February 22, 1967 NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C ARTHUR INFORMATION Greetings to President Elmendorf on behalf of President Johnson, written by U. S. Commissioner of Education Harold Howe II and delivered by the Hon. James A. Haley, Member of Congress, Seventh District of Florida: On behalf of President Johnson, I take pleasure in extending greetings to Dr. John van Gaasbeek Elmendorf on the occasion of his in-auguration as President of New College. The brief history of Ne\v College has been marked by a bold and creative pursuit of educational excellence which is most appropriate to the spirit of our times and our country. Through its dramatic and inno-vative programs, this small college offers the promise of leadership in contribution to the progress of American higher education. It is gratifying that College be guided in its formative years by a man who is equally distinguished for professional attainment, searching imagination, and dedication to public service. I congratulate New College on its choice of President and wish Dr. Elmendorf every success in his challenging assignment.
