Feb. 3, 1967 NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C ARTHUR INFORMATION FOR RELEASE UPON RECEIPT SARASOTA, PLA.--William Thurston, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Thurston, 11720 Lytle St., Silver Spring, Md., and a student at New College, competed re-cently on his college's team entry in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. He was one of three students from New College to tie for 12lst place in a field of 208 teams fro 251 colleges and universities across the country. Thurston was also one of three New College students who finished among the top 500 individual co petitor A total of 1526 undergraduate mathematics students took the gruel-ling all-day The aveTage score was 14 points out of a possible 100. The students who competed from ew College were the firat New College -...a participate in the Putnam competition. -3o-
