/ 'NEW COLLEGE NEWS RELEASE NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C ARTHUR INFORMATION FOR RELEASE: TUESDAY, October 18, 1966 SARASOTA --Students of Nell1 College were informed last night that they must introduce more discipline into their social life and conduct more consistently as responsible citizens of the colleee and of the local com-munities in which the college is established. Acting on the basis of a campus-wide study he has conducted in the year since he was elected to the college presidency, Dr. John Elmendorf told the students: "There is every expectation on the part of your families, your peers, and your college that you will become leaders of the society in l11hich you live. The style with which you lead must be acquired nm11 in its essen-tials." In a series of meetings throughout the day and evening with students, faculty, and staff, President Elmendorf discussed what he described as a double crisis of integrity and confidence involving the college. He told the students that the crisis of community confidence in the college would not solve itself until they dealt constructively with the crisis of integrity stemming from irresponsible aspects of their own private and pub-lie social behavior. He added that administrative action would be required if they do not do so promptly. -more-

The action by the president Has one of the first implementations of recommendations resulting from his year-long survey of the college. President Elmendorf also informed all members of the college community that, for as long as proved necessary, he would be devoting virtually all of his time to work designed to insure the financial foundations of the college. "This is a normal requirement for the president in any new privatelysupported institution, he said. "It will necessitate my being away from the campus from time to time during the cominp, months, but the college has a well-qualified faculty and staff have already demonstrated their ability to carry on the day-to-day affairs of the college." -30-
