PAGE 1 I f I l/1/66 I I NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C. ARTHUR INFORMATION FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Authorization for a federal loan for $182.000 to assist in the construction of new buildings in the East Campus of New College was given today. Notice of the authorization came in a telegram from Congressman James A. Haley and Senators George A. Smathers and Spessard L. Holland. The funds are to be used in the construction of the classroom building of Hamilton Court, ground for which was broken in January. A dining hall and student center building also was started at that time. Other funds for equipment are being sought under the Higher Education Act of 1965. Included in the new building for which the new funds will be used are: a Lecture Hall seating 116 students; a language laboratory with 36 listening stations; a language seminar room complete with portable electronic equipment; an electronic workroom which will have a central recording facility capable of picking up audio or video information from anywhere in Hamilton Court and transmitting to any other part; plus five classrooms, one doubling as a studio for filming television programs. Completion date for the entire Hamilton Court, dedicated to Mrs. Carl Hamilton of Venice and her late husband, is projected for October 22, 1966. Work on the building is being done by the construction firm of Settecasi and Chillura. Capt. Ralph E. Styles, Director of Physical Plant for New College, said that when completed the dining room and student center building, plus the classroom buildings, will complete the present programmed work on the East Campus and will provide facilities so that the college can function at a level of 275 students for an indefinite period. -30- |
