NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C. ARTHUR INFORMATION FOR RELEASE AFTER NOON, January 18, 1966 SARASOTA --Ground was broken today for two new phases of building on the New College campus, a student activities center and an academic building. The new buildings, to be constructed at a total cost of $1,149,614, will be named the Carl and Marjorie Hamilton Court in honor of Mrs. Hamilton of Venice, Fla., and her late husband. Taking part in the groundbreaking ceremonies today on the college's East Campus were Mrs. Hamilton; New College President John Elmendorf; Charter Class student Charles Hamilton of Glen Ellyn, Ill., a grandson of Mrs. Hamilton; Dr. Douglas Berggren, a member of the faculty; George Higgins, a member of the college board of trustees; and Frank Settecasi, a member of the Tampa contracting firm of Settecasi and Chillura. Construction of the two new phases of campus building is expected to begin immediately with completion set for October. President Elmendorf, in his remarks at the brief ceremonies marking the start of the construction, paid tribute to Mrs. Hamilton for her gift of $500,000, which made the construction possible. He recounted some of the background of the late Mr. Hamilton, who was at one time a leading figure in the lumber industry and then became a partner in the internationally known management engineering firm of Booz, Allen and Hamilton. -more-

Net-1 College Construction Page 2 President Elmendorf also praised Mrs. Hamilton for her great role in public affairs in Venice and Sarasota County. He said that she had been a loyal friend of New College since its early noting that her gift to the college was announced at the dedication of the campus in 1962. He told the group gathered on the East Campus that when completed the buildings would provide much needed facilities for an enlarged student body. He pointed out that a new class of approximately 100 students would be added to the present 170 students to complete the organization of all three years of the college. Design of the new will follow the same style that architect I. M. Pei used in creating the three residence halls now completed nearby. The new student activities center and the classroom building will be linked by a tile walkway with the residences. -30-
