Steele, "'hose grandfather founded the present-day Street Journal, has been elected to the Ne\..r College Board of Trustees. Announcement of her membership on the board t..ras made by Chairman Louis H. Lailotte. A former Broadway actress, avid sportswoman, and a civic t..rorker, iirs. Steele resides in Sarasota winters and has just built a new home in her birthplace, Cohasset, Mass. }1rs.Steele is the daughter of llr. and Hrs. Hugh Bancroft of Cohasset. Bancroft was president of the t.J"all Street Journal and founder of the fin-ancial newspaper, Barron's Heekly, named for his father, Clarence t-7. Barron. Barron bought the Wall Street Journal and remade it in modern successful business format. Today Nrs. Steele_ is director of Dow-Jones and Co., publisher of the tt..ro newspapers, plus The National Observer, a weekly general interest newspaper. Educated at the Hinsor School in Boston, i1rs. Steele took part in many sports during these years. She Has :lassachusetts Girls Champion in sailing, and won many prizes as a horsewoman in Hassachusetts and Ue\-t York. She also swam competitively and spent one summer giving swimming lessons to people of all ages, contributing all her eArnings to the Children's Medical Center in Boston -more-

Hrs.Edwin L. Page 2 After her schooling, Hrs. Steele attended the Gloucester School of Little Theater and then spent eight years on Broadway during she took part in eight shows, mostly in comedienne roles, one tY"ith actor Halter Pidgeon. Her last show was a starring role in the drama''Johnny Belinda" \-lhich had a year's run. Mrs. Steele gave up the theatre to be married and the Steeles had three daughters, two now in college and one in a private school. In Sarasota Hrs. Steele has been active as a board member of the United Appeal, Happiness House, Family Service Bureau, and the Citizens Bureau of Governmental Research of the Sarasota County Civic League. Hrs. Steele has been vigorous in her support of College since its founding. One of her daughters, Jeannie, a member of the charter class of students that entered in the fall of 1964, -30-
