ARTHUR IN FORMAT/ON Sarasota, Florida --Dr. John van G. Elmendorf, vice president of Brown University, has been named the second president of Net..r College. Dr. George F. Baughman, founding president of the college, has been named president of the New College Foundation as trustees activated a unique program for the development of the college. Announcement of the appointment of Dr. Elmendorf, effective September 1, was made by Louis 11. LaUotte, chairman of the College Board of Trustees and chairman of the Executive and Finance Committee of International Business Hachines Corporation. The new president has been vice president of Brotnl University since 1961. He previously had been vice president, dean of the faculty, and professor of linguistics at Mexico City College for eight years. Dr. Baughman was a founding trustee of New College and named its first president in 1961. He previously had been vice president of dew York University and of the University of Florida. The New College Board of Trustees acted on a recommendation by Dr. Baughman that a separate corporation be established to work toward long-range support for New College.

Sarasota, Florida Page 2 In the nearly five years since its founding, the college has obtained a 115-acre waterfront campus, raised more than $9 million to help provide for buildings and operations, gathered a faculty which included in the first year historian Arnold J. Toynbee, and completed as the first stage of its building program three new residence courts designed by architect I. 1 : 1. Pei. The charter class of students was enrolled last fall. New College is for its eleven-month calendar which provides three class terms and three independent study terms each year and for graduation in three years. Heavy reliance is placed on student responsibility in studies and campus life. Dr.Elmendorf was educated at the University of North Carolina, obtaining his doctorate in 1951. He taught in private schools for several years and then was named executive director of the Institute, and later joined dexico City College. He named Vice President of in 1961. Dr. Baughman holds degrees from the University of Florida and George ton University, He has been a banker and a but for nearly 25 years has been in education as faculty member and administrator. He was vice president of New York University for six years, during one of its great expansion periods. -30-
