NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C. ARTHUR INFORMATION FOR RELEASE: TUESDAY, AUGUST 31, 1965 A new Olympic-standard swimming pool is being constructed on the New College East Campus, made possible by an anonymous gift from a Sarasota man and his wife. The $50,000 pool which will be adjacent to the new residence court com-plexes, should be ready shortly after students return for classes in late September, according to New College president Dr. George F. Baughman. L-shaped in design to provide room for both racing and for diving competi-tion, the pool has six lanes running its 25-meter length and both one meter and three meter diving boards. "This pool will mean much to both present and future classes of students at New College," said president Baughman. "It offers both a present recreation outlet and a future competitive athletic facility." "The donors of the pool have had a continuing !nterest in New College and they have been particularly close to our first class of students," said presi-dent Baughman. The pool is part of a planned recreation area for the East Campus designed by architect I. U. Pei. In addition to the swimming pool, several tennis courts are planned for an adjacent area. A pathway will link the pool with the three completed residence courts where both the first and second year students will be in residence after Septem ber twenty-seventh. -more-

The wall is made of the same special brick from the residence courts are constructed. Night lighting, both underwater and around the pool, provtdes for safe swimming in the evening and makes possible greater use of the pool. Hhen completed the pool have its own filtration system, space for which was designed when the East mechanical plant was planned.
