(vlt -NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C. ARTHUR INFORMATION FOR RELEASE: Friday, June 19, 1964 Walter A. Sonnenberg was appointed Dean of Administration of New College today. Sonnenberg comes to New College from a position as Assistant to the Comptroller at Massachussetts Institute of Technology, according to an announcement by President George F. Baughman. At M. I. T. Sonnenberg had the responsibility for the adrninis-tration and management of the institute budget amounting to more than $150,000,000 annually. He also assisted in government and industrial contract negotiations amounting to more than .$100,000,000. As Dean of Administration, Sonnenberg will have charge of New College non-academic affairs, such as finance, personnel, pur-chasing, and other administrative matters. A graduate of Norwich University, he earned his master degree at the Amos Tuck School of Dartmouth College and also became a certified public accountant. (more)
Walter A. Sonnenberg News Release -2 A native New Yorker, Sonnenberg was a veteran combat Marine officer in World War II and was recalled for service in the Korean War. He later joined the United States Coast Guard Reserve and retired as a Lieutenant Commander. After his military service, he worked for the state of Vermont Department of Public Safety and then for several years was with a major paper products firm in Pennsylvania and Ohio. He opened his own insurance and real estate office in North-field, Vermont, before joining M. I. T. in 1956 as Assistant Accounting Officer. In addition to his M. I. T. duties of Budget Supervisor and Contract Negotiations, Sonnenberg was fiscal officer for the institute's $66,000,000 fund drive, for the institute's Centen-niel Celebration and was treasurer of the M. I. T. Faculty Club. Sonnenberg is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the National Association of Accountants.
