COLLEGE NEWS RELEASE NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C. ARTHUR INFORMATION 7-/ 7-G.r FOR RELEASE: A minister-teacher and his physician wife have been named to two staff positions at New College. Appointment of the Rev. Pierson P. Harris and his wife, Dr. Ella Freas Harris was made by Dr. John W. Gustad, Provost and Dean of the College. The Rev. Harris will be Assistant to the Dean, Chairman of the Religious Life Committee, and Director of Student Activi-ties. Dr. Harris will be Director of Student Health. Both will serve as resident masters and counselors for the students. A graduate of Haverford College, The Rev. Mr. Harris earned the Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Sacred Theology degrees from Union Theological Seminary. He also did graduate work at New York University and Columbia University. He had pastorates at New York City, Brooklyn, Chatham, N. J., Orange, N.J. Worcester, Mass., Philadelphia, Pa., Harford, Pa., Scranton, Pa., and Westwood. (more)

Harris has taught at Union Theological, Jewish Institute of Religion, New Brunswick Theological Seminary, Haverford, Drew University and Drew Theological Seminary, Upsala, College, Boston University School of Theology, and Curry College. His subjects were English Literature, Speech, in to theological subjects. He is expected to tutor in English at New College. Dr. Harris is a graduate of Mt. Holyoke and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She did her interne work at Women's Hospital of Philadelphia where she later became Medical superintendent. After a period in the Belgian Congo doing medical work, she returned to the United States to be married and then taught part time at Drew University. Later she was to teach at Mt. Ho ,!yoke and was a physician for state hospitals in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Pennsylvan She was assistant university physician at New York Universl __ and assisted in Student health service at Mt. Holyoke. ###
