NEW COLLEGE NEWS RELEASE FOR RELEASE: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 1964 NEW COLLEGE, SARASOTA, FLORIDA FURMAN C. ARTHUR INFORMATION New College today announced a gift of $10,000 from International Business Machines Corporation. College President Dr. George F. Baughman said the gift was presented by IBM Board Chairman Thomas J. Watson Jr. The letter of transmittal said IBM had heard of the 11progress you are making in establishing New College. 11 11You may be assured we will follow the development of your institution with interest," the head of the world-wide research and industrial firm wrote. New College, which is a privately endowed college of the liberal arts and seiences, is scheduled to open in September. Dedicated to "uncompromising excellence in education,11 New College has received gifts in excess of $7 millions. Dr. Baughman said the gift by IBM sp-ir-it of private ente);"prise aiding private education. The company has been interested in New College for several years. In 1962 a team of IBM specialists visited the campus to discuss new electronics systems in college teaching. That same year, Louis H. LaMotte, now retired executive vice president of IBM, and still Chairman of its Executive and Finance Committee, accepted membership on the New College Board of Trustees. ##
