Abstract:
Over the past decades, mental toughness research has become more prevalent but has yet to include non-athletes. The present study was intended to evaluate mental toughness, personality, and benefit finding abilities in non-athletes. The sample consisted of 86 participants, 16 male, 58 female, 5 non-binary, and 7 who did not respond ranging in age from 18 to 69 years (M=22). The findings are discussed in the context of how mental toughness associated with personality, benefit finding and gender. A series of correlations and t-tests were conducted resulting in significant findings regarding the personality profile of those considered to be mentally tough. On average, male participants reported being more mentally tough than females while female participants reported being more neurotic than males. Recognition of individual differences in the structure of self could benefit this study in future research along with a larger sample size to provide further evidence for the claims made.
